How to Splice Low-Voltage Landscape Lighting Wire?

Landscape lighting is a great way to accent and highlights different features around your yard and home, but if you are installing it yourself, you’ll find that it often comes in kits with pre-cut lengths of wire. 

If your yard is larger than the manufacturer assumes, however, or you have creative ideas about where to place your light features, those lengths might not be sufficient, and you might need to splice low-voltage landscape-lighting wire. With a few simple tools and a little elbow grease, you can customize your landscape lighting.

Plan for Safety and Preparations

Connect your lighting to a power source before you do anything else. Unplug it and, if necessary, shut off the power to the outlet at the breaker before working on any electrical project.

Stretching The Existing Wire of Landscape Lighting

Your first step is to disconnect the existing landscape lighting from its power source.

After that, you have to ensure that the whole wire is stretched out.

The wire needs to be cut from the middle after it has been stretched out.

Stripping Insulation

Preparing the wire for splicing is the next step. Strip the cut ends of the wire so that the insulation is removed.

Make sure that each end of the wire that you cut is 1-inch bare. The leads of the wire must now be separated by a distance of about 4-6 inches.

Inserting the wire into the circuit

Make sure that the additional sections of wire are cut long enough so that the lights can be placed where you want them.

Additions to the original wire must be of the same gauge and construction.

Also, strip the additional wire to 1-inch.

Heat-shrinking tube

In the fourth step, the heat-shrinking tube is slid.

Heat-shrinking tubes must be attached to the ends of any new or additional wires that you are going to add to the original wire.

Each end must have two of these, so a total of four heat-shrinking tubes will be required.

Combining or twisting the old and new wires

In the fifth step, the old and new wires are twisted together so that a continuous length is created. The next step is to solder.

Solder each joint with a soldering iron. First, heat the wire and then let it flow to the joint. You will have to repeat the soldering until you see that the job is completely done.

Sliding heat-shrinking tube over the joints

You will have to wait until the joints are cool after step 5. The heat-shrinking tube can then be applied over the joints once they are cooled.

For the rest of the job, you will need a hairdryer. As you turn on the hairdryer, direct its heat to the heat-shrinking tube. Ensure that the tube is tightly adjusted to the joints.

Test operation

Now you are ready to plug in the landscape system and test its operation. Place the lighting fixtures as required.
